FG Opens Coastal Road to Ease Lagos Traffic After Accident

The Federal Government has approved the temporary use of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road following a gas tanker accident that caused severe traffic gridlock along the Chisco axis, inward Victoria Island, Lagos.

The approval, announced on Monday by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) via its official X handle, is aimed at decongesting traffic in the affected corridor after the gas-laden tanker overturned, blocking major sections of the highway.

According to the statement, the decision was reached in consultation with the Federal Ministry of Works and the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation wishes to inform motorists that due to a truck accident at the Chisco area, Lekki, the Federal Ministry of Works has approved the opening of the Coastal Road for use pending when normalcy is restored,” the statement read.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, urged road users to cooperate with traffic officials and exercise patience while the temporary diversion remains in place.

Earlier in the day, LASTMA confirmed that its personnel, working alongside emergency responders, successfully averted a potential fire disaster at the scene of the crash.

The agency added that recovery operations were ongoing and assured the public that normal traffic flow would resume once the damaged tanker was safely removed from the road.
