FG Secures Release Of Six Nigerians Detained In Côte d’Ivoire

The Federal Government has secured the release of six Nigerian citizens who had been detained in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over allegations of economic crimes.

The development was announced on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

According to the ministry, four of the detainees were freed on June 22, while the remaining two regained their freedom a day later following months of diplomatic engagement between Nigerian and Ivorian authorities.

The ministry attributed the successful outcome to persistent efforts by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan, which maintained regular contact with the detainees and worked closely with relevant institutions in Côte d’Ivoire to facilitate their release.

It praised Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwabiola Ezenwa, and embassy officials for their commitment and professionalism throughout the process.

“The Embassy ensured continuous consular access to the detained Nigerians, monitored their welfare, and engaged relevant authorities, including the Ivorian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, to secure their freedom,” the statement said.

The ministry also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation, noting that the strong diplomatic ties between both countries played a key role in resolving the matter.

Reaffirming its commitment to Nigerians abroad, the Federal Government said protecting the rights, welfare and dignity of its citizens remains a top priority of the country’s foreign policy.

It added that Nigerian diplomatic missions worldwide would continue to provide consular support and engage host governments through established channels to safeguard the interests of Nigerians living overseas.

The ministry further urged Nigerians residing or travelling abroad to respect the laws of their host countries and maintain contact with the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate whenever necessary.
