FG suspends plan to introduce tax on telecoms services

The Federal Government has suspended the move to introduce excise duty on telecommunication services in the country.

The suspension of the plan was announced on Monday by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami.

He spoke at the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee on Excise Duty for the Digital Economy Sector in Abuja.

On August 8, the Federal Government announced its plan to introduce taxes on telecommunication services and beverages effective from 2023.

It said the move was meant to boost the revenue accruing from the non-oil sector.

But at the event on Monday, Pantami said the plan was put on hold because the telecommunications sector was already overburdened by multiple taxations.

According to him, going ahead with the tax regime would increase the cost of telecommunication services in the country.
