The Federal Government has announced plans to establish fire stations across all 109 senatorial districts to enhance emergency response, prevent fire disasters, and protect lives and property.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, by the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Olumode Samuel-Adeyemi, during a visit to Singer Market in Kano.
The visit followed a fire that broke out at the market on Saturday, February 14, destroying goods worth billions of naira.
Samuel-Adeyemi said a dedicated fire post would be established within the market to reduce response times and prevent future incidents.
Speaking on behalf of Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, he extended condolences to the Kano State Government, traders, and residents affected by the blaze.
“Two major fires have occurred in Singer Market within weeks. Establishing a fire station inside the market will improve response times and enhance safety,” he said.

Samuel-Adeyemi urged Nigerians to give way to fire trucks, noting that blocked access delayed response on February 14.
He cited faulty wiring, unsafe fuel storage, cooking inside shops, generator use, lithium batteries, and unattended appliances as common causes of market fires.
He added that the FFS has intensified inspections and public education campaigns.
A proposed amendment to the Fire Service Act will strengthen enforcement powers, including authority to seal unsafe premises.
Plans also include expanding fire stations to local government areas, constructing water reservoirs in major markets, and collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force and Security and Civil Defence Corps for crowd management.
Samuel-Adeyemi commended the Kano State Fire Service and other emergency agencies for their cooperation and assured continued federal support in training, equipment, and operational capacity.
