The Federal Government has announced the full closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos State starting Saturday, April 27, to carry out essential structural repairs.
Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, disclosed this during a bridge inspection on Monday. She noted that the bridge, which connects the Ijora Causeway to Apapa, requires comprehensive rehabilitation—especially the replacement of damaged bearings that support the bridge deck.
“This bridge has been undergoing phased repairs. We’re now at the final stage, which involves lifting the entire deck to replace about 50 faulty bearings across three sections,” Kesha said.
The Ijora Bridge is a crucial route to Apapa, home to the busy Tincan Island and Apapa Ports. Its closure is expected to cause major traffic disruptions.

Kesha acknowledged the expected inconvenience but stressed that the repairs are vital for safety.
“The bridge won’t collapse, but it definitely needs intervention. You can feel the vibrations while driving over it—the bearings beneath have weakened significantly,” she explained.
She urged commuters to be patient, assuring that the work would be done swiftly. Authorities are expected to announce alternative routes and traffic management plans soon.
The Federal Ministry of Works has advised residents and logistics operators to follow official updates and plan their travel accordingly.
