First Lady Backs Senate Amid Akpabio Scandal, Says Lawmakers Deserve Respect

Amidst the controversy surrounding the Nigerian Senate, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has publicly stated that the chamber is a “mature” institution deserving of respect.

She made this statement in regards to the sexual harassment allegations leveled against the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

While commemorating the International Women’s Day at the State House in Abuja, First Lady Tinubu spoke to journalists and dismissed concerns regarding the Senate’s handling of current issues, stating that the lawmakers are “doing what is needful”.

Speaking from her own 12 years in the Senate, First Lady Tinubu stressed that the chamber should be a beacon of honor, not a source of controversy.

She advised women to carry themselves with dignity and confidence, and to avoid compromising situations. She praised the resilience of Nigerian women, encouraging them to strive for excellence and called for their active leadership.
