Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after securing a 2-1 victory over Mexico on Thursday.
The Nigerian youngsters sealed the win with goals from O. Umejiaku and M. Dunstan before Mexico scored a late consolation goal.
Umejiaku broke the deadlock in the 40th minute to give Nigeria the lead before Dunstan doubled the advantage in the 71st minute, putting the Flamingos in a strong position to secure qualification.
Mexico reduced the deficit in the 90+2nd minute through E. Delgado, but the late goal was not enough to prevent Nigeria from advancing to the last eight.
The victory marks another important step in the Flamingos’ campaign as they continue their pursuit of the tournament title.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals as they seek to maintain their momentum and progress further in the competition.
