Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been denied a place at the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.
The final, played on Sunday at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, saw the Young Stallions produce a dominant display to complete a double over Nigeria and secure the regional championship.
Burkina Faso stunned the seven-time African champions by racing into a three-goal lead within the opening 15 minutes, leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb.
Abdul Maikaba’s side attempted to fight back after the break and reduced the deficit through a penalty, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.
However, the Burkinabe remained in control and eventually added a fourth goal late in the match to put the result beyond doubt.

The victory means Burkina Faso will represent WAFU Zone B at the 2027 U-20 AFCON alongside hosts Ghana, while Nigeria will miss the continental tournament and, as a consequence, the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan.
The result also brings an end to Nigeria’s reign as WAFU Zone B champions, having won the previous edition in Lomé in October 2024.
Burkina Faso had already demonstrated their superiority over Nigeria during the group stage, defeating the Flying Eagles 2-0 before repeating the feat in emphatic fashion in the final.
The Young Stallions have now established a strong recent record against Nigeria. They defeated the Flying Eagles 1-0 at the 2024 WAFU Zone B tournament in Lomé, while their 2022 meeting in Niger Republic ended in a 2-2 draw.
Nigeria had gone into the final aiming to retain their regional crown and book a place at the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
Instead, their campaign ended in disappointment, with Burkina Faso securing both the trophy and the zone’s ticket to next year’s continental championship.
