The remains of former Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, were laid to rest on Friday, October 3, 2025, following a series of funeral rites in his hometown of Benin City.
Arase, who served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police from 2015 to 2016, passed away on August 31, 2025, at the age of 69 after a brief illness.
His death marks the end of a distinguished career in law enforcement and public service.
The late IGP’s body arrived in Benin City on Saturday, September 27, 2025, aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft.
He was received at the Benin Airport by senior police officers, including the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 5, Sulaiman Dogo, and the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika.
The Edo State government was represented by the Chief of Staff, Gani Audu. A brief parade was held to honour him before the body was conveyed to Ebony Mortuary.
On Friday, October 3, a funeral mass was held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Benin City, after which the late IGP was interred at his private residence.

Tributes poured in from public figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, who described Arase as a man of integrity and dedication to national security.
The current Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, led a final parade in his honour, reflecting the respect he commanded within the force.
Arase’s tenure as IGP was noted for efforts to reform the police and enhance professionalism.
After retiring in 2016, he continued to contribute to national development, including serving as Chairman of the Nigeria Police Service Commission from 2023 until his passing.
The Edo State government has pledged to commemorate Arase’s contributions to both the state and the nation.
