Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, has died.
The news of his passing broke on Thursday, July 3, and has since triggered an outpouring of tributes from across the football community, especially from those who followed Nigeria’s golden era in the 1990s.
The Super Eagles confirmed his death in a tribute shared on their official X handle. They described Rufai, popularly known as “Dodo Mayana,” as one of Nigeria’s football greats.
“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion,” the statement read.

The national team also celebrated his lasting impact on Nigerian football, praising not just his goalkeeping heroics but his influence beyond the game.
“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai,” the post concluded.
Rufai played a crucial role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 1994 AFCON and was part of the historic squad that qualified for the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup in the same year.
He is remembered for his leadership, charisma, and commanding presence in goal, qualities that earned him the respect of teammates and fans alike.
