In a dramatic rescue operation off the Atlantic coast, four Nigerian stowaways were saved from near-certain death after allegedly being thrown overboard by the crew of a foreign cargo vessel. The young men had secretly boarded the ship in a desperate bid to escape Nigeria’s harsh economic realities and seek better opportunities abroad.
The incident, which could have ended in tragedy, took a miraculous turn thanks to the swift response of a maritime logistics firm owned by France-based Nigerian businessman, Mr. Harrison Niyi Alonge. The company’s crew noticed unusual movement in the water and quickly raised an alarm. Acting on the report, Mr. Alonge initiated an emergency rescue operation.
According to the company’s public relations officer, Olawale Ezekiel, “The four individuals were discovered clinging to floating debris, weak and barely conscious. A few more minutes and they might not have survived.”
All four—identified as James John, Favour Efe, Kingsley Williams, and Kingsley Mathew—were rescued alive, though in a traumatised state. They have since been stabilized and are receiving medical care.
They were later handed over to the Nigerian Navy at the Navy Base Atlas Cove, Takwa Bay, for further assistance and debriefing.
“This is nothing short of a miracle,” Mr. Alonge stated.

“It also highlights the growing desperation among Nigerian youths and the urgent need for systemic change.”
The incident brings renewed focus to Nigeria’s worsening migration crisis. Economic instability, soaring unemployment, and insecurity continue to push many young Nigerians toward dangerous and illegal migration routes.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that hundreds of Nigerians risk their lives annually by embarking on such perilous journeys.
Human rights organizations have since urged the Nigerian government to investigate the incident thoroughly and to intensify efforts to address the root causes of irregular migration.
There is a growing call for comprehensive reforms in economic policy, job creation, and youth empowerment to curb the trend and protect vulnerable citizens from exploitation and harm.
