‘Fragile Pause’: Macron Questions US Tariff Truce

French President Emmanuel Macron isn’t convinced, at the recent tariff pause declared by the US President Donald Trump.

Reacting to Trump’s latest trade move a 90-day suspension of tariffs Macron described the window as nothing more than a “fragile pause.”

He shared his concerns on X, warning that the gesture only hints at the possibility of dialogue but hardly eases the pressure.

“Fragile, because the 25% tariffs on steel, aluminium and automobiles and the 10% tariffs on all other products are still in place. They represent 52 billion euros ($58.8 billion) for the European Union! Fragile, because this 90-day pause means 90 days of uncertainty for all our businesses, on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond,” he wrote.

His message was clear: the clock is ticking, and the risks remain.

Macron said France and the European Union would approach any negotiations as a team pushing for the complete removal of the tariffs.

Trump had cited rising fear and uncertainty as the reason for the pause. But from Macron’s tone, that fear hasn’t gone anywhere.
