A domestic conflict has spiraled into a violent communal crisis in Nto Usoh village, located in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, after a retaliatory attack left a woman seriously injured and raised urgent concerns about law, order, and justice within the community.
The latest incident, which occurred on Thursday, involved the brutal assault on Mrs. Idara Kingsley, who sustained multiple machete wounds allegedly inflicted by Mr. Iniobong Cosmos and his son, Isaac Iniobong Cosmos. The assault, which eyewitnesses say was premeditated, is believed to be in retaliation for an earlier event involving Iniobong’s Wife Peace Iniobong Cosmos.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with First News Media, a community eyewitness, Mr. Usen Etukudo, detailed the sequence of events that ignited the unrest.
According to Etukudo, the conflict initially began earlier in June when Peace Cosmos physically assaulted her younger brother’s wife following a personal dispute and reportedly sent her out of the family home. When her younger brother returned, he reported the matter to the village youth council.
The youth summoned Peace for questioning, but she refused to attend the meeting. In an attempt to enforce community protocol, some of the youths went to her residence to bring her out. During the confrontation, Peace allegedly resisted and, in the heat of the altercation, reportedly grabbed the private parts of one of the male youths.
“The situation escalated quickly,” Etukudo said. “The youth were forced to restrain her physically, leading to a beating that left her with visible bruises.”

Photographs shared by community members show Peace with deep injuries to her head, arms, and shoulders — wounds that drew the attention of local authorities and the Ministry of Women Affairs. The incident was reported to the police, who began investigations into the matter.
However, in a turn of events that has shocked many residents, Peace’s husband and son allegedly took matters into their own hands. On Thursday, they reportedly stormed the home of one of the youths involved in the earlier incident and attacked his wife, Idara Kingsley, with a machete. Idara suffered deep cuts and was rushed for urgent medical attention.
Community members have condemned the violence, calling for swift intervention from the police and state government. The incident has also raised questions about the handling of domestic disputes and the breakdown of conflict resolution structures at the village level.
Police authorities are yet to issue a formal statement, but investigations into both assaults are reportedly ongoing. No arrests have been confirmed as of press time.
“This isn’t just a family issue anymore. It’s a breakdown of peace and order in our community,” one resident told First News Media. “We urge the government to step in before more lives are affected.”
