The Federal Road Safety Corps has intensified enforcement operations and public sensitisation campaigns nationwide to address the growing menace of commercial drivers stopping indiscriminately to pick up passengers, a practice authorities say continues to endanger pedestrians and disrupt traffic flow.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during an interview, noting that arbitrary stopping by commercial drivers — particularly during weekends — remains one of the most frequent traffic violations recorded across the country.
According to him, the offence contributes significantly to road obstruction and has been linked to avoidable accidents on both highways and within urban centres.
“It is a routine offence that creates obstruction on Nigerian roads and has caused accidents. It happens daily and offenders are being apprehended accordingly through our patrol activities,” he said.
Ogungbemide acknowledged the challenge of apprehending all violators at once due to the widespread nature of the offence but stressed that routine patrol teams continue to arrest offenders across various locations.
He explained that while enforcement remains a key strategy, the corps has equally prioritised sustained public enlightenment to discourage unsafe behaviour among drivers and commuters.

He urged members of the public not to encourage the practice by boarding vehicles at unauthorised locations, stressing that behavioural change among passengers is essential to improving compliance with traffic regulations.
FRSC records, he added, show consistent daily arrests of traffic offenders, reflecting ongoing nationwide monitoring efforts.
The spokesman further emphasised that creating obstruction on roads or highways violates traffic laws and would continue to attract sanctions as part of broader measures to ensure safer road usage.
He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to enhancing road safety through continuous patrol operations, strict enforcement of traffic rules and community-based awareness campaigns aimed at protecting pedestrians and promoting orderly movement on Nigerian roads.
