Fuel Distribution Crisis Looms as NUPENG Tanker Drivers Set for Indefinite Strike

Nigeria may face disruptions in fuel supply beginning Monday, September 8, 2025, as the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has announced plans to embark on an indefinite strike.

The strike threat follows a deadlock over the introduction of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks into the nation’s fuel distribution network.

NUPENG, in a joint statement by its President, Comrade Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Olawale, warned that the initiative could throw thousands of its members out of work.

The union accused stakeholders of pushing ahead with the new system despite multiple unresolved concerns raised in several meetings.

The tension deepened after the recruitment of new drivers under separate terms of employment for the CNG trucks.

According to NUPENG, the new arrangement appears designed to bar workers from joining existing oil and gas unions, a move the group described as “anti-labour and unacceptable.”

“We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria, its regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to urgently wade into this matter before it degenerates further,” the statement read.

The union further cautioned that should the strike go ahead, the lifting and distribution of petroleum products nationwide would be severely impacted.

While appealing for public understanding, NUPENG stressed that its stance was not aimed at sabotaging Nigerians but at defending the rights and welfare of its members.
