The fragile two-month ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has collapsed into intense violence, with Israel launching a wave of devastating airstrikes across the Gaza Strip. At least 326 Palestinians have been reported dead, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, as heavy bombardments hit densely populated areas, including Khan Younis, Rafah, Gaza City, and Deir el-Balah.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and destruction, with families desperately searching through rubble for missing relatives, while overwhelmed hospitals struggled to cope with the influx of wounded and deceased. Many of the casualties include children, women, and the elderly, raising alarms over the escalating humanitarian crisis.
Israel Defends Offensive, Hamas Condemns Retaliation
The Israeli military confirmed conducting “targeted strikes” against Hamas strongholds, insisting that the offensive was necessary after the group rejected proposals to extend the ceasefire and release remaining Israeli hostages. Israeli officials warned that military operations would intensify in the coming days.
Hamas, in turn, accused Israel of violating the truce, warning that the renewed hostilities endanger the remaining hostages. The group called for mass protests across the Arab world and urged international condemnation of Israel’s actions. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) echoed these sentiments, blaming Israel for derailing peace efforts.
Breakdown of Negotiations Fuels Conflict
The ceasefire talks, initially brokered to facilitate hostage exchanges, fell apart over disagreements on its duration and scope. While Israel pushed for a temporary extension until April, Hamas demanded a permanent end to hostilities, leading to a deadlock.

Among those killed in the strikes was Mahmoud Abu Wafah, a senior Hamas security official. The Gaza Government Media Office condemned the assault, accusing Israel of “disregarding all moral and legal principles.”
International Reactions and Escalating Humanitarian Crisis
The renewed fighting has further worsened conditions in Gaza, where residents are already suffering from severe shortages of food, medical supplies, and electricity. The White House confirmed that Israel consulted with U.S. President Joe Biden before launching the latest airstrikes, signaling continued Western support for Israel’s military actions.
With the death toll rising and both sides entrenched in their positions, the region appears headed for another prolonged and deadly conflict, threatening the fragile hope for peace.
