Ghana Gives DStv Ultimatum to Cut Subscription Fees or Face Licence Suspension

The Ghanaian government has issued a stern warning to satellite television provider DStv, demanding a reduction in its subscription rates by Thursday, August 7, or risk having its broadcasting licence suspended.

Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, announced the directive during a press briefing, stating that the National Communications Authority (NCA) has been instructed to initiate suspension proceedings against MultiChoice Ghana, the local operator of DStv, if the company fails to comply with regulatory expectations.

George emphasized that the move comes in response to growing public dissatisfaction over what many Ghanaians consider exorbitant subscription fees charged by DStv, despite economic pressures on households.

“I have directed the NCA to begin the process of suspending MultiChoice Ghana’s licence if the company does not take immediate steps to reduce its subscription fees,” the minister said.

The directive underscores the government’s increasing scrutiny of foreign service providers operating in Ghana and its broader push to protect consumer rights in the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors.

As the August 7 deadline approaches, the development has sparked significant public interest, with consumers expressing support for the government’s tough stance.

MultiChoice Ghana has yet to issue an official response to the ultimatum.
