Nigerian gospel singer Esther Igbekele is mourning the death of her mother, Mary Amope Igbekele (JP), who died at 71.
Igbekele announced the death on Friday, August 14, 2026, in an emotional Instagram post, writing: “AND MY MOTHER DIED. Death, you took my GOLD away.”
Mary’s death comes 16 months after the family celebrated her 70th birthday and wedding anniversary in April 2025. She turned 70 on April 15, with a thanksgiving and birthday gathering held in Ikorodu on April 20.

The cause of death has not been disclosed, and funeral arrangements were yet to be announced as of Friday.
Condolences have since poured in from fans and well-wishers following the announcement.
Igbekele, known as the Duchess of Gospel Music, began her music career in 1996 and has released several gospel projects. She has also performed in Nigeria and internationally, including in the United States and United Kingdom.
The singer is yet to release further details about her mother’s death.
