Gov Otti Refutes Defection Rumors, Reaffirms Loyalty to Labour Party

Amid swirling rumors of political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has firmly debunked claims that he is planning to dump the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) or any budding political coalition.

Speaking during a recent public engagement, Governor Otti set the record straight with characteristic bluntness, declaring his continued allegiance to the Labour Party and dismissing the rumors as unfounded speculation.

“One of the key questions I’ve been getting, especially from some members of the Global Economic Council, is about governors decamping,” Otti remarked. “Let me be clear: I’m still with the Labour Party. I’m not going anywhere.”

His response also touched on the new opposition coalition making the rounds in political circles. “People ask if I’m a part of any coalition,” he said. “My answer is simple: Have you seen my name? Have you seen me at any meeting? No? Then that should answer your question.”

Otti emphasized that his focus remains on governance and delivering results in Abia State, not political scheming. “We’re busy working. That’s what Abians elected us to do. No coalition meetings, no distractions,” he said.

He acknowledged past internal disputes within the Labour Party but pointed out that the Supreme Court has since provided clarity and resolution. “We had our issues, yes. But we didn’t run. We took them to court, and the apex court has spoken,” Otti said, underlining that the party is now on stable ground.

In his characteristic style, the governor also pushed back against critics promoting “stomach infrastructure” politics, insisting Abians are hardworking and only ask for a supportive environment. “Good roads, a clean environment—give people that, and they’ll take care of the rest,” he said.

Taking a swipe at those he says are resistant to reform, Otti was blunt: “If you’re not ready to do things the right way, then you don’t belong in this government.”

Governor Otti’s remarks are the latest in a series of public statements aimed at silencing doubts about his political future and reinforcing his administration’s commitment to development over political theatrics.
