Gwagwalada Bridge Repairs Bring Abuja–Lokoja Highway To Crawl

Travellers along the Gwagwalada axis of the Abuja–Lokoja highway experienced severe traffic congestion on Monday following the closure of one lane on the bridge.

The disruption caused motorists travelling both out of the Federal Capital Territory and into Abuja from Lokoja to spend several hours on the road. Many civil servants and schoolchildren reportedly had to trek long distances to reach their offices and schools, according to a report by the National Television Authority.

In a statement on its social media platforms, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the congestion was due to the ongoing dismantling of the temporary steel fortification on the Gwagwalada Bridge.

The Corps urged motorists to maintain lane discipline and drive responsibly, especially with the upcoming Sallah celebrations, which are expected to increase vehicular movement.

“Motorists and travelers along the Gwagwalada corridor are advised that the ongoing dismantling of the temporary steel fortification on the Gwagwalada Bridge has led to traffic congestion around the area. Road users are urged to exercise patience, remain calm, and cooperate with FRSC personnel and other security agencies deployed to manage traffic. Compliance with directives from officers on duty will help ease congestion and prevent avoidable crashes,” the statement read.

FRSC also advised road users to avoid dangerous overtaking and to approach the construction zone with caution, while planning their movements to ensure safety for all road users.
