Hardship: Reps slash salaries by 50%, begs Nigerians against protest

Members of the House of Representatives have resolved to cut their salaries by 50% in response to the pervasive economic hardship across Nigeria.

The resolution was passed during the plenary session on Thursday following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance.

The motion, titled “An Appeal to the Proponents of Proposed Nationwide Protest to Maintain Peace, Eschew Violence and Open the Windows for Meaningful Engagements with Government at all Levels in Order to Address their Issues,” was sponsored by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State.

Ben Kalu, the Deputy Speaker, proposed the salary amendment, stating, “It is a worthy sacrifice the legislators should make for the next six months.”

Kalu initially mentioned that lawmakers earn N500,000 monthly, but Speaker Tajudeen Abbas corrected him, stating that they receive N600,000 in monthly salaries.

This decision by the lower legislative chamber reflects their commitment to sharing in the economic challenges facing the country and aims to foster peace and meaningful engagement with citizens.
