Headies Founder Animashaun Blasts Artistes Over Nomination Complaints

The founder of The Headies, Ayo Animashaun, has criticised Nigerian musicians who complain about missing out on nominations despite failing to submit their works for consideration by the awards platform.

Animashaun expressed his frustration in Instagram Stories on Thursday, October 15, 2026, questioning why some artistes publicise entries to international award schemes but overlook Nigeria’s homegrown music awards.

He referred to the unnamed musicians as “Tom, Dick and Harry” and ended one of his posts with the remark, “Funny!!!”

In a follow-up message, Animashaun defended the organisers’ decisions, saying their strategy was shaped by a vision understood by participating artistes and sponsors.

“Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not every opinion carries equal weight,” he said, dismissing the suggestion that public criticism should determine the validity of the organisers’ choices.

Animashaun did not identify any artiste or specify the international award bodies involved.

His remarks echo concerns he raised in February 2025 about the prominence of foreign music awards in Nigeria, particularly the Grammy Awards, and the need for greater support for local recognition platforms.

Established in 2006 as the Hip Hop World Awards, The Headies has expanded its international presence. Its 18th edition was planned for Toronto, Canada, under the theme Africa to the World.

On October 10, 2026, organisers announced that the ceremony had been postponed from October to April 10 and 11, 2027, to accommodate an expanded programme of activities in Nigeria and Canada.

Animashaun’s comments have renewed debate about artistes’ participation in local award schemes as Nigerian music continues to gain international recognition.
