A routine flight turned into tragedy today as a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, operated by East Wind Aviation, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Bonny Finima in Rivers State, carrying eight passengers.
As of the latest reports, three bodies have been recovered, while the search for potential survivors continues.
The helicopter, with registration number 5NBQG, was en route from Port Harcourt Military Base to the NUIMANTAN oil rig when it “ditched into the waters” at approximately 11:22 a.m., according to a statement by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
The aircraft’s Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) did not signal, adding complexity to the rescue mission.
In an immediate response, the Ministry, led by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, activated emergency teams, including the Nigerian Search and Rescue Unit and other aviation bodies like the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the National Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB). Efforts have also been intensified with the deployment of military and low-flying aircraft in hopes of finding any remaining survivors.
“The incident is distressing, and our hearts go out to the families of those on board,” said Odutayo Oluseyi, Head of Press and Public Relations for the Ministry. “We are committed to providing all necessary support during this challenging time.”
The waters surrounding Bonny Finima, a vital area for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, have been a site of frequent traffic for both helicopters and vessels supporting offshore oil rigs.
Today’s incident has shocked the industry, heightening concerns about aviation safety, especially over open waters.
As search and rescue efforts persist, neighboring aerodromes have been alerted to provide support. Officials are focusing on locating any remaining passengers and determining the cause of the crash, which has yet to be identified.
This crash marks another somber moment for Nigeria’s aviation industry. As investigations continue, the focus remains on recovering the missing passengers and offering solace to grieving families.
Further updates are expected as more details emerge.
