A joyous occasion turned tragic on Saturday as a man identified simply as Akinyele collapsed and died during his wife’s 60th birthday celebration at an event centre in the Egbeda area of Lagos State.
The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, was captured on video and showed the heartbreaking moment Akinyele slumped while addressing guests at the event.
According to eyewitnesses, Akinyele had invited his wife to join him on stage during his speech and appeared to request a glass of water. When there was no immediate response, he gestured again. Moments later, he lost balance and collapsed in front of stunned attendees.
Panic erupted as efforts were made to revive him on-site. He was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, but medical personnel reportedly pronounced him dead upon arrival.

“It was supposed to be a celebration, but it ended in tears,” said one guest who witnessed the scene. “We’re still in shock.”
Attempts to reach the Lagos State Police Command for official confirmation were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. Messages sent to the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, had not been responded to.
The tragic incident has left the community in mourning, with many expressing condolences to the bereaved family and reflecting on the fragility of life.
