President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has addressed claims on social media alleging he has numerous side chicks, firmly denying the rumors during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Akpabio stated, “I have only one wife and she is enough for me.”
These allegations emerged following a controversial incident during a Senate plenary last week where Akpabio reprimanded Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for speaking without recognition, comparing the Senate to a “nightclub.”
His remarks drew backlash on social media, with various women’s groups accusing him of being sexist and disrespectful.
Before denying the allegations of extra-marital affairs, Akpabio offered a public apology to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.
He said, “I will not intentionally denigrate any woman and I always pray that God will uplift women. Distinguished Senator Natasha, I want to apologize to you. The interest shown in social media shows that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you. I do not mean any harm.”
Akpabio also called for a focus on more pressing national issues and urged social media users to practice decorum.
He added, “People should concentrate on things that will move this country forward. Social media handlers should practice with decorum. We won’t out of anger regulate social media.”
