Ibas Vows to Restore Stability in Rivers After Swearing-In as Administrator

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) has pledged to prioritize peace, security, and stability in Rivers State following his swearing-in as the state’s Administrator at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters after the ceremony, Ibas acknowledged the complexities of the situation but emphasized that his primary focus would be restoring law and order in the troubled state.

“First of all, I think we know the circumstances that led us here,” Ibas stated. “Mr. President made it very clear in his broadcast that the main issue is maintaining law and order in the state. For any meaningful activities to take place in Rivers State, that is the utmost task. I will work together with all stakeholders to ensure that we bring peace, order, security, and stability to the people and government of Rivers State and Nigeria at large.”

His appointment follows President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers on Tuesday, citing a governance breakdown due to the prolonged political crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and lawmakers loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The move also led to the suspension of Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

The political turmoil in Rivers had escalated in recent months, with clashes between factions, legal disputes, and a tense standoff over the control of state institutions.

Tinubu’s decision has sparked intense debate, with critics questioning its constitutionality while supporters argue it is a necessary step to restore order.

With Ibas now in charge, Rivers State faces a new chapter under emergency rule. His ability to navigate the crisis and restore political stability will be closely watched in the coming months.
