The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu, held a crucial roundtable meeting in Kano State on Monday with the attorneys-general from the North-West states, as part of ongoing efforts to combat corruption in the region.
During the meeting, Aliyu emphasized the importance of passing the Whistleblower Bill, urging the National Assembly to expedite its passage.
He argued that the bill would empower individuals who wish to report corrupt activities, enabling them to do so without fear of retribution.
“Let me use this occasion to call on the National Assembly to pass the Whistleblower Bill into law, as those wishing to expose corrupt practices will have the strength to do so,” Aliyu stated.
Aliyu also called on Nigerians to stand firm against bribery, particularly from public officers.
He urged citizens to report instances of bribery to the appropriate authorities to ensure accountability.
“No single individual or government can fight corruption alone.
We need to come together to fight the monster,” he added.
Highlighting the role of the ICPC in addressing corruption, Aliyu reiterated that the agency would continue its collaborative efforts with other stakeholders while respecting the rule of law.
He also emphasized the critical role of local expertise, calling on the attorneys-general to work closely with the ICPC to strengthen systems of transparency and accountability in public service.
The meeting also addressed the importance of a coordinated effort in the fight against corruption, with the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Sokoto Division, Justice Muhammad Shu’aibu, urging anti-graft agencies to intensify their actions against corruption in all its forms.
As part of the ongoing battle, Aliyu reaffirmed that the ICPC is committed to investigating and prosecuting corruption across all sectors of public service, with the support of key regional partners.
The event brought together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for tackling corruption at the grassroots level and fostering national prosperity through greater accountability.
