The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has reportedly ordered the probe of a police officer caught smoking Indian hemp in public in the Ijora area of Lagos State.
The picture of the policeman, which was taken by his colleague, had gone viral after it was posted online.
It was later reposted on Instagram by Instablog 9ja.
“Nigerian police officer at Ijora Lagos smoking weed on duty,” the online news service had captioned the picture.
Baba as such ordered an investigation to unravel the identity of the policeman.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed this in a tweet on his Twitter handle.
Adejobi, who expressed concern over the incident, said the IGP would take necessary disciplinary action against the police officer.
The police spokesperson added that the Lagos State Police Command had also been ordered to identify officer, and that the IGP would take necessary disciplinary action with immediate effect.
“The police have commenced necessary action on this ugly scene. We have contacted Lagos Command to fish him out, name and shame him, and necessary disciplinary action will be taken from the office of the IGP with immediate effect.
“This is condemned in its totality as such is unpolice. It’s quite unfortunate that we can see an officer of the police, on uniform, degenerates to this level. We must kick again this to serve as a deterrent to others,” the police image maker said.
