Imo Workers Jubilate as Govt Implements ₦104,000 New Minimum Wage

The Imo State Government has officially begun payment of the newly approved ₦104,000 minimum wage to its workforce, fulfilling Governor Hope Uzodimma’s promise to enhance salaries and improve workers’ welfare.

Reports confirmed that civil servants in the state received payment alerts reflecting the revised wage structure over the weekend, sparking widespread excitement and appreciation for the governor’s commitment to better living conditions.

Governor Uzodimma had earlier approved ₦104,000 as the new entry-level salary for fresh civil servants, ₦513,000 for medical doctors, and ₦220,000 for lecturers in state-owned tertiary institutions — a move that positions Imo as the leading state in Nigeria’s new wage ranking.

With this development, Imo surpasses Lagos, which pays ₦88,000, Rivers with ₦85,000, and both Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa, which currently offer ₦80,000 each as their minimum wage.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Prince Eze Ugochukwu, and made available to journalists on Sunday, the wage increment is expected to strengthen Imo’s economy by enhancing workers’ purchasing power and stimulating local businesses.

“Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration is pioneering this bold policy shift, designed to uplift the financial stability of workers and drive economic growth within the state,” Ugochukwu stated.

He added that the wage adjustment would have “far-reaching benefits,” boosting local commerce and improving the overall standard of living for residents.

According to the state government, the move underscores Uzodimma’s continued commitment to prioritizing workers’ welfare and creating a thriving economic environment in Imo State.

With the new wage policy now in effect, Imo sets a precedent for other Nigerian states as it leads the charge in implementing one of the most generous minimum wage structures in the country.
