The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called for the impeachment of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara if he has committed an impeachable offence.
Wike made this assertion during a live media chat on Wednesday, stressing the need to uphold the rule of law and criticising the governor’s close associates.
“Politics is not a joke. If he has done something that warrants impeachment, let them impeach him. It is not a criminal act,” Wike stated.
He also expressed concern over the disregard for due process, particularly in legislative matters, questioning the legitimacy of laws enacted by a small fraction of lawmakers.
“I find it unbelievable that in this country, people are seriously discussing a situation where three members of a House sit and make laws, and they expect the Supreme Court to validate such actions,” he said.
Wike, a former Rivers State governor, also criticised the state judiciary, describing the Rivers State High Court as the worst in the country.

Emphasising the independence of lawmakers, he said, “Speakers and Assembly members are not our subordinates. They were elected just like governors. You don’t treat them as your boys or girls. I built relationships with my Speakers; it was never a master-servant dynamic.”
He also recounted how elder statesman Ferdinand Alabaraba, who supported an Ijaw governor’s emergence, later felt betrayed by the same individual.
“This elder statesman almost cried because the person he supported ended up insulting him. Now, he can’t even approach him for help. That’s the reality,” Wike said.
The political tension in Rivers State has been ongoing, with calls for respect for the rule of law and fears of unrest should Fubara face impeachment.
