Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday returned incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is also candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party elected for a second term.
INEC declared that Obaseki secured the highest votes in the governorship election held on Saturday.
INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, who announced the total result of the election, said Obaseki secured 307,955 votes across 18 local government areas while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu polled 223,619 votes.
The incumbent governor won in 13 local government areas while Ize-Iyamu, his closest challenger, won in only five.
Total votes cast is 550,242 while the total number of valid votes in the election is 537,407, and rejected votes – 12,835.
INEC declared Obaseki winner of the poll after announcing the results from all the local government areas.
The incumbent governor ran against the APC standard-bearer, Osagie Ize-Iyamu and 13 others.
Obaseki was elected on APC’s platform in 2016 but defected to the PDP after being denied the ticket following intra-party squabbles.
Governor Obaseki will officially begin his second term in office in November 2020.
