The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced Saturday, August 16, 2025, as the date for bye-elections in 16 constituencies across 12 states.
The development was disclosed by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during a consultative meeting with leaders of registered political parties held on Thursday, June 26, in Abuja.
The bye-elections, he said, will involve over 3.5 million registered voters across 32 local government areas, 356 wards, and 6,987 polling units. A total of 30,451 election officials are expected to be deployed.
However, Yakubu explained that bye-elections will not be conducted in two constituencies due to legal and security concerns.

According to him, “There will be no bye-election in Khana II State Constituency of Rivers State due to the prevailing situation in the area following the declaration of a State of Emergency by the Federal Government.”
He added, “Similarly, there will be no bye-election in Talata Mafara State Constituency of Zamfara State due to an existing litigation on the vacancy declared by the State House of Assembly.”
INEC also released a tight timeline for the electoral process, with political parties expected to hold their primaries between July 17 and 21.
Nomination of candidates via the INEC portal will open at 9:00 a.m. on July 22 and close at 6:00 p.m. on July 26. Public campaigns will run from August 2 to 14.
