INEC Online Voter Register: Steps To Check Your Name, Polling Unit

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made its Preliminary Register of Voters available online, giving Nigerians another opportunity to check registered voters in their polling units ahead of the 2027 general election.

The online platform allows users to view the names and photographs of people registered in a particular polling unit. However, users must create an account and sign in before accessing the register.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to check the preliminary voter register online.

Step 1: Visit INEC’s voter register website

Open your browser and visit https://www.display.inecnigeria.org

The website is designed specifically to display the preliminary register of voters for individual polling units.

Step 2: Create an account or sign in

You will need an account to access the register. Follow the instructions on the website to sign in before proceeding to search for a polling unit.

Step 3: Select your polling unit

After signing in, locate your polling unit by selecting the following details:

– State

– Local Government Area (LGA)

– Ward

– Polling unit

Alternatively, you can enter the polling unit code if you already know it.

The platform allows users to view the register for one polling unit at a time.

Step 4: Check the names and photographs

Once you have selected your polling unit, the website will display the preliminary register containing the names and photographs of registered voters in that location.

You can use the alphabetical letters provided on the page to jump to surnames beginning with a particular letter, making it easier to navigate the list.

Check the displayed information carefully, particularly if you want to confirm whether your details or those of other registered voters appear in the register.

What you need to know about the online register

INEC has clarified that the platform is strictly for viewing the preliminary register.

It does NOT provide voter registration services, facilitate transfers between polling units or replace the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC).

The website also does NOT allow users to search for an individual’s name across the entire country. Instead, users must locate a specific polling unit to view its register.

Those who want to register as voters or carry out other voter registration activities should use INEC’s designated voter registration portal.

Why does INEC limit access?

According to the platform’s guidance, INEC monitors activity and restricts the amount of register information each account can view to protect the data from misuse.

Users who reach their viewing limit may be asked to return and try again later.

Why checking the register matters

Checking the preliminary register gives voters an opportunity to confirm the information recorded for their polling units and identify possible discrepancies while the register is still being processed.

INEC conducted the physical display of the preliminary register nationwide from October 9 to 15, 2026, in line with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026.

The commission has said it is processing claims and objections arising from the exercise ahead of the certification and publication of the final register, scheduled for December 15, 2026.
