Barely weeks after joining Romanian powerhouse CFR Cluj, Nigerian international Kenneth Omeruo has been relegated to the sidelines as the club confirms he’s battling a significant knee issue.
The former Leganés and Chelsea defender, who was tipped to bring experience and steel to Cluj’s backline, was notably absent from the pitch in their recent UEFA Conference League qualifier against Hungary’s Paksi FC.
Omeruo remained an unused substitute during the goalless stalemate, raising eyebrows among fans and analysts.
CFR Cluj head coach Dan Petrescu addressed concerns post-match, revealing that the club has temporarily withdrawn Omeruo from first-team training until he’s fully recovered.
“Omeruo is not ready,” Petrescu stated. “I don’t know if you know, but he has a big problem with his knee. We are trying to solve his problem, we are trying to get him back on his feet. When he trains normally with the team, he will have a chance to play. Until then, he cannot train with the team.”
The news marks another chapter in what has been a frustrating run for the Super Eagles defender.

Omeruo struggled with injuries last season in Turkey, and Cluj’s medical staff is now tasked with managing his rehabilitation carefully.
The 30-year-old’s condition casts a shadow over his anticipated resurgence in Europe and could have implications for his return to the Nigerian national team ahead of crucial fixtures in the coming months.
Despite the setback, the club remains hopeful of a full recovery, with no timeline yet disclosed.
Omeruo, known for his resilience, will be aiming to bounce back and reestablish himself both at club and international level.
