Insecurity Hits Media: Arise News’ Sommie Maduagwu Slain in Abuja

The ARISE Television family is in mourning following the shocking killing of one of its rising stars, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie.

Maduagwu, a 29-year-old lawyer-turned-broadcaster whose vibrant style lit up the ARISE News screen, was killed during an armed robbery attack at her Katampe residence in Abuja in the early hours of Monday.

In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, ARISE News described her death as a painful loss not only to the station but to viewers across Nigeria who connected with her energy and passion.

“Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.
Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the statement read.

The station also expressed deep condolences to her parents, siblings, colleagues, and friends, urging authorities to ensure a speedy investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

Maduagwu joined ARISE News with a reputation for professionalism, warmth, and dedication. Colleagues recall her not only as a talented anchor but also as a supportive friend who brought optimism into the newsroom.

Her promising career was tragically ended just as she was gaining national recognition as one of the fresh, engaging voices of Nigeria’s media.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ajao Adewale, has ordered tactical squads — including the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Special Intelligence Unit, and forensic crime scene experts — to take over the investigation.

According to police sources, Maduagwu lived alone in Katampe, while her parents reside in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Officers from the Katampe Division, led by CSP Sadiq Abubakar, were the first responders to the scene.

The news of Maduagwu’s death has sent ripples of grief across Nigeria’s media industry, with colleagues and viewers taking to social media to pay tribute to her life and work.

For many, Sommie represented the new face of Nigerian journalism — young, fearless, and passionate about telling stories that matter.
