The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has appointed two-time Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, as his new lead counsel in his ongoing legal battle with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Kanu’s wife, Uchechi Kanu, confirmed the appointment in a statement made available by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful. According to her, Kanu not only accepted Agabi as his lead counsel but also recognized the need for the Senior Advocate of Nigeria to formally address the court on key legal controversies that have shaped the case.
Kanu’s case, which has been marred by legal disputes and judicial controversies, saw a turning point following Justice Binta Nyako’s recusal. The IPOB leader’s heated outbursts against her court had reportedly led to tensions within Nigeria’s judiciary. Agabi’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to smooth relations between Kanu’s defense team and the judiciary.
“In the court today, my husband, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, accepted the need for Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, to address the court of Justice James Omotosho on what transpired at Justice Binta Nyako’s court, which shook the foundations of the Nigerian judiciary,” Uchechi Kanu stated.
She emphasized that Chief Agabi’s role goes beyond legal representation, as he steps in to balance Kanu’s grievances with the need to maintain the dignity of the court. The senior lawyer, who previously served as Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice on two occasions, is expected to leverage his vast experience to navigate the complexities of the case.
During the proceedings, Justice James Omotosho reportedly acknowledged the delays and complications that have plagued Kanu’s trial over the years. According to Uchechi Kanu, the judge extended an apology to the IPOB leader for the prolonged handling of his case by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

“Chief Agabi’s move was strategic, balancing Onyendu’s fury with the court’s dignity,” she noted, adding that Agabi’s intervention aims to restore mutual respect between Kanu’s legal team and the judicial system.
While Kanu’s legal battle continues, his new counsel’s approach appears to signal a shift toward a more conciliatory legal strategy. Uchechi Kanu hinted that Agabi’s role may extend beyond litigation, suggesting a possible pathway to dialogue and resolution.
“Chief Agabi spoke in his personal capacity, emphasizing his vision for an amicable resolution and peaceful co-existence. It is not rocket science,” she added.
