ISWAP Fighters Clash With Nigerian Troops Near Maiduguri

Tension gripped the outskirts of Maiduguri late Sunday night, the 15th of March, 2026, following reports of intense fighting between suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province and troops of the Nigerian Army.

The confrontation was said to have occurred on the fringes of the city, raising anxiety among residents after several loud explosions were reportedly heard.

Security analyst Brant Philip said the blasts were detected in the western area of the city roughly an hour before he shared the information, noting that the sounds appeared to be connected to a confrontation between suspected insurgents and military personnel stationed around the city’s outskirts.

He explained that the exact circumstances surrounding the clash were still uncertain as developments were unfolding when he posted the update on the social media platform X.

He wrote: “Loud explosions were heard in the western part of Maiduguri around an hour ago, details are still unclear as the situation is ongoing.

“Heavy clashes between suspected ISWAP militants and the Nigerian army in the outskirts of Maiduguri tonight, capital of Borno State in northeast Nigeria.”

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has long served as a key base for military operations targeting insurgent groups active in Nigeria’s northeast region.
