President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday paid tribute to mothers and women across Nigeria, highlighting their sacrifices and contributions to society. In a message marking this year’s International Women’s Day, Akpabio recalled the role of his mother in shaping his life and leadership journey.
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President described mothers as one of humanity’s greatest blessings, noting that women continue to nurture families, sustain communities, and contribute to national development despite challenges.
“I am the biggest beneficiary of the love, care, compassion and sacrifice of a woman. My mother gave her all to raise me to become what I am today,” Akpabio said. “I remain ever grateful and appreciative of what our women and mothers go through in raising their children, supporting the family and building societies. I congratulate the Nigerian Woman on the auspicious occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day.”
Akpabio also emphasized the need for greater investment in women across all sectors, in line with the theme of this year’s celebration, “Give and Gain.” He pledged the legislature’s commitment to promoting female participation in economic and political processes.

Rising from modest beginnings in Akwa Ibom State to become governor between 2007 and 2015, and now leading the 10th Senate, Akpabio said his personal story reflects the powerful role mothers play in shaping the future of children and society.
International Women’s Day, marked annually on March 8, celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while calling attention to gender equality and the need for greater inclusion of women in leadership. In Nigeria, advocates continue to press for increased female participation in politics and governance, particularly following repeated setbacks for gender-related bills in the National Assembly.
Akpabio’s message adds to the growing calls by political leaders and stakeholders for enhanced support and investment in women as part of efforts to accelerate national development.
