In the stillness of the early hours of Monday, an audacious prison break unfolded at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, the administrative hub of Kogi Local Government Area, Kogi State.
Unlike previous jailbreaks, where armed assailants stormed the facility in a hail of bullets, this escape was eerily seamless a vanishing act through the tower.
While official figures remain unconfirmed, the government estimates that no fewer than 12 inmates exploited the opportunity to flee.
Despite the silence from prison authorities, the Kogi State Government has acknowledged the incident, calling for an urgent federal probe into the unsettling development.
Kingsley Fanwo, the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, condemned the escape, calling it “unfortunate.” He assured the public that the government, in collaboration with security agencies, is actively investigating the breach and will leave no stone unturned in recapturing the fugitives.
A major point of concern is the nature of the escape. How did the inmates manage to slip away through the tower without leaving behind visible damage? This baffling detail has raised suspicions of possible insider sabotage, prompting authorities to dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In response, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has issued directives to the State Security Adviser, urging close collaboration with correctional officials and security agencies to prevent future breaches.

The state has also pledged logistical and material support to enhance security measures at the facility.
Commending security agencies for their prompt response, Fanwo called on residents to stay vigilant, urging them to report any unfamiliar faces or suspicious movements. He delivered a stark warning: “Anyone found sheltering an escaped inmate will face the full wrath of the law.”
Reassuring the public, the government emphasized that the situation is under control, urging citizens to carry on with their daily lives without fear.
“This government remains steadfast in its duty to protect lives and property,” Fanwo assured. “While investigations are ongoing, rest assured that no effort will be spared in bringing the escapees back to justice.”
The Kotonkarfe prison break raises more questions than answers was it a meticulously planned operation, or was there a security lapse? As authorities intensify their search and forensic investigation, one thing is certain: this is far from over.
