Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the 2027 general election as a crucial test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity, urging citizens to place peace, unity and justice above political interests.
Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, as the country commemorated 66 years of independence.
With political activities ahead of the 2027 elections expected to intensify, the former President urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and support actions that would preserve national unity and stability.
He said, “In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence, Jonathan acknowledged the challenges the country had encountered over the years but said the resilience of Nigerians had helped the nation overcome difficult periods.
“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands.
“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant.
“As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity,” he said.

Jonathan also pointed to the opportunities available to Nigeria, saying the country could achieve sustainable development by effectively harnessing its diversity as well as its human and natural resources.
He called particularly on young Nigerians to remain optimistic and courageous as they contribute to efforts to build a country capable of securing a better future for generations to come.
“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development.
“To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come,” he said.
The former President, however, stressed that the realisation of Nigeria’s potential would depend significantly on the quality and commitment of leadership across the country.
He charged leaders at all levels to embrace greater responsibility and patriotism while addressing the nation’s social and economic difficulties through sacrifice, accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
“Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism.
“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan said.
He further urged Nigerians to remain committed to national service and collective efforts to build a peaceful, secure and equitable society.
“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he added.
