Jonathan Debunks ₦500bn Plot To Challenge Obi

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed as false reports claiming he was offered ₦500 billion to contest the 2027 presidential election against National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 5, 2026, by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan described the claim as fabricated and aimed at dragging him into unnecessary political controversy ahead of the 2027 general election.

Eze said the former president neither received nor discussed any offer to enter the presidential race or undermine the electoral prospects of any candidate.

He said the report lacked credibility, noting that it failed to state when and where the alleged remarks were made, identify those behind the purported offer or present any evidence to support the allegation.

According to him, the story was deliberately concocted to mislead the public and fuel political tension.

“Former President Jonathan has never made any statement suggesting he was offered money to contest the presidency or work against any candidate,” Eze said.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the report and verify political claims before circulating them, warning that misinformation often rises as elections approach.

Eze reiterated that Jonathan has no connection with the allegation and should not be linked to fabricated reports ahead of the 2027 polls.
