Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said he will resign from the All Progressives Congress if President Bola Tinubu disrespects opposition parties or the Catholic Church.
Kalu made the remark during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he defended the President’s approach to opposition politics while insisting that political competition should remain fair and lawful.
The former governor of Abia State said Nigerians should not expect the President to accord special treatment to opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Will you just lay a red carpet for the opposition to come and be dancing around if you are a politician?” Kalu asked.
He maintained that the President had not victimised any opposition member and had continued to operate within the bounds of the law.

“Tinubu is fair to them. He has not touched any of them unlawfully. The law of the land is very straightforward, and if you respect the law of the land, you will be well in the country,” he said.
According to Kalu, the President had already assured Nigerians that the 2027 elections would be conducted fairly.
“I heard what he said, that we are going to have a fair contest and that he will not touch anybody. I am a very fair-minded man who speaks the truth,” he added.
The senator, however, warned that he would reconsider his membership of the ruling party if the President failed to respect democratic principles.
“Any day Tinubu disrespects the opposition or the Catholic Church, I will resign from the APC,” he said.
His remarks come amid growing political activities and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
