Kano Ex-Governor Shekarau Rejoins APC After Exit From PDP

Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party and returned to the All Progressives Congress, marking another major shift in his long political journey.

Shekarau announced his defection on Sunday, April 19, at his residence on Mundubawa Avenue in Kano, which was visibly adorned with APC campaign materials as supporters gathered.

He made the announcement alongside Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, also a PDP figure, who joined him in the move back to the ruling party.

Addressing loyalists at the gathering, Shekarau said the decision was reached after wide consultations and careful evaluation of available political options.

“We have weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution. Do you all agree?” he asked, inviting any objections from those present.

First Daily reports that the former governor had earlier submitted his resignation from the PDP on the same day.

In a letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, he confirmed his immediate exit from the party.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.

He also expressed appreciation to party officials at the ward level for their support during his stay.

“I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship,” he added.

Copies of the resignation were sent to the Kano State PDP Chairman and the PDP Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area, signalling a formal and structured exit.

Shekarau’s latest political move comes after months of speculation, driven largely by internal tensions within the PDP.

In April, during a visit by APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, he had hinted at his departure, describing the PDP as weakened by unresolved internal challenges.

He also held closed-door discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, further fuelling defection rumours.

Shekarau, who governed Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the All Nigeria Peoples Party, has a long history of party realignments.

He was among the founding figures of the APC before later exiting, returning to the PDP in 2018, and again shifting political allegiance over time.
