Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared his support for a bill aimed at granting “full autonomy to local government councils” across the state.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Friday, the 12th of September 2025, by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Speaking during the 31st Executive Council meeting held at the Government House Annex, Kwankwasiyya City, the governor endorsed the council’s approval to forward the bill to the State House of Assembly for legislative action.
Governor Yusuf explained that the bill is designed to provide all 44 local councils in Kano with both financial and administrative freedom.

He pointed out that such autonomy would allow councils to control their resources, carry out projects promptly, and take decisions that respond directly to community needs.
The governor emphasized that “local government autonomy was essential for good governance, accountability, and the acceleration of development at the grassroots,” adding that the reform was a necessary step toward strengthening democracy in the state.
Yusuf further expressed optimism that lawmakers would back the proposal, saying it reflects the general aspirations of the people of Kano.
