The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, FCIArb (UK), has restated his commitment to improving the welfare of aviation workers and strengthening unionism in the sector.
Speaking at the 11th Edition of Aviation Workers’ Week and Award Night, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, on February 25, 2025, Keyamo emphasized that trade unions should serve as partners in progress rather than obstacles to development. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, he urged aviation workers to embrace dialogue in addressing industry challenges, stressing that “JAW-JAW is always better than WAR-WAR.”
Themed “The Role of Aviation Trade Unions in Galvanizing Workers’ Support for the Attainment of Ministerial Mandates,” the event brought together key aviation stakeholders, including heads of agencies, industry professionals, and airline operators.
Keyamo honored for transforming aviation sector
As part of the ceremony, Keyamo was presented with an award in recognition of his proactive leadership and dedication to repositioning Nigeria’s aviation sector. He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive on the prompt payment of workers’ salaries is being fully implemented, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring fair treatment for all aviation employees.
He also encouraged workers to embrace the Civil Service Implementation Plan, which aims to modernize public service and improve efficiency across government agencies.
Stakeholders applaud aviation workers’ dedication
The Director of Human Resources Management, Bello Sani Torankawa, commended the Joint Consultative Negotiating Council (JCNC) for its efforts in advancing workers’ welfare and promoting unity within the sector.

Similarly, Air Commodore Ademola Ojuku, mni, President of the Aviation Round Table, praised the JCNC for fostering collaboration among aviation professionals and driving industry progress.
In his welcome address, JCNC Chairman, Comrade Hector Nnadi, called on aviation trade unions to strengthen their partnership with the Ministry to ensure smooth implementation of policies. He highlighted the critical role unions play in aligning workers’ interests with government objectives and commended the dedication of aviation workers who work tirelessly to maintain safety, security, and efficiency in the sector.
Discussions and awards cap event
The event also featured panel discussions on the role of aviation trade unions, where speakers emphasized the importance of social dialogue, cooperation between unions and management, and skills development to enhance productivity.
The grand finale was the award ceremony, where individuals and organizations were honored for their outstanding contributions to the industry. Among the recipients were Arik Air, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, and distinguished aviation professionals.
The Aviation Workers’ Week once again highlighted the vital role of unions in the sector and reinforced the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a harmonious working environment for all aviation professionals.
