Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, the Catholic priest abducted along the Ejemekuru axis in Imo State, has regained his freedom, sparking relief and renewed calls for improved security in the region.
The Owerri Archdiocesan Catholic Secretariat confirmed his release in a statement issued early Thursday by the Chancellor and Secretary of the Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbara.
Fr. Ubaechu was kidnapped on Sunday, March 23, while traveling to Owerri for the annual priests’ retreat. He was freed on Wednesday, March 26.
“We thank God for His infinite mercy and for answering our prayers. We appreciate your fraternal solidarity and prayers. To God be the glory,” the statement read.
While reports suggested that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N20 million, the statement did not confirm whether any payment was made.
His release has been met with widespread relief among parishioners and the Catholic community. However, many have voiced concerns over the rising insecurity along the Ejemekuru axis of the Izombe/Ogbaku road, notorious for abductions and armed robberies.
A parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church, identified as Okey, urged the Imo State Government and security agencies to take urgent action.

“We thank God for Fr. Ubaechu’s safe return, but we can’t ignore the growing insecurity in this area. The government must act fast,” he said.
He also recalled the abduction of another Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Mathias Opara, on May 26, 2023, in the same vicinity, stressing the need for a permanent security checkpoint.
“The repeated kidnappings suggest this area has become a safe escape route for criminals. Security forces must intervene before more people fall victim,” Okey added.
The Imo State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding Fr. Ubaechu’s release or measures to enhance security in the troubled area.
Meanwhile, residents remain on edge, hoping the latest incident will prompt swift government action to curb the growing wave of violent crimes.
