Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State has called on Directors of Local Government (DLGs) and Treasurers to maintain local government autonomy and uphold professional ethics in their duties.
He made this appeal during an interactive session at the Government House in Lokoja on Sunday.
Ododo emphasised that the local government officials serve as vital representatives of the government at the grassroots level, and their performance would enhance the relationship between the government and the people, fostering development.
“I expect all DLGs to support treasurers in addressing challenges in local government administration,” Ododo stated, commending the resilience and productivity of the officials.
He highlighted the importance of accurate record-keeping and adherence to professional standards, particularly for accountants in the public sector, to ensure transparency and accountability.
The governor also encouraged unity among officials, urging them to support the state’s Accountant General, Habiba Onumoko, in delivering the dividends of democracy to the grassroots.
Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Aliyu Umar, praised Governor Ododo’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
He pledged that the legislature would continue to support the governor in bringing governance closer to the people.
In her welcome address, the Accountant General, Habiba Onumoko, commended Ododo’s contributions to grassroots development, youth and women empowerment, and the creation of employment opportunities. She described the governor as a man of impact and humility.
Aliyu Musa, the chairman of the forum of DLGs in Kogi State, thanked Governor Ododo for approving a ₦72,500 minimum wage for workers and implementing other initiatives that have improved the welfare of civil servants.
He also expressed gratitude to Onumoko for her guidance and professionalism in their work.
