Labour Party Shifts 2027 Primaries To May 30

The Labour Party has adjusted its timetable for the 2027 general election primaries, moving all nomination exercises for presidential, governorship, House of Representatives, and State Assembly races to May 30.

The change was announced in Abuja on Thursday, May 21, by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa.

Under the revised arrangement, all categories of primaries will now be conducted on a single day, replacing the earlier split schedule that placed governorship and State Assembly contests on May 27 and presidential alongside National Assembly primaries on May 29.

Asogwa explained that the adjustment was made to avoid clashes with significant national and religious events.

He said, “In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the 29th May anniversary, the Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions.”

According to him, the party’s decision was guided by the need to promote inclusiveness and respect for national sensitivities, allowing participants to fully take part in the celebrations without distraction.

He also acknowledged that the shift may inconvenience aspirants and stakeholders but said the party considered it necessary in the broader public interest.

With the new timetable, all aspirants across the various elective offices will now compete on the same day as the party finalises preparations for its 2027 primaries.
