Lagos Govt Reaffirms Legality of Speed Limit Regulations

In response to mounting public concerns over speed limit enforcement on select roads, the Lagos State Government has reiterated the legality of its regulations and urged motorists to comply for the sake of road safety.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, cited Section 28(2)(a) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018) as the legal basis for penalizing drivers who exceed prescribed speed limits.

He emphasized that adherence to these rules is essential in reducing accidents and ensuring safer roads.

Addressing the regulatory framework, Osiyemi clarified that the Ministry of Transportation has exclusive authority over the design, size, and color of traffic signs across Lagos State.

This standardization aligns with international best practices and ensures uniformity in road signage.

The commissioner also tackled misinformation circulating about speed limit enforcement, urging the public to rely on official sources.

He clarified that speed cameras are currently operational only on Alapere Road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, locations identified through extensive studies as requiring such measures. He added that additional areas may be considered for speed camera deployment following further assessments.

Osiyemi underscored that the primary goal of speed cameras is to protect both motorists and pedestrians.

He encouraged residents to verify information through the official website of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, its social media channels, or traffic management authorities.

With road safety remaining a top priority, the Lagos State Government remains committed to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring that speed limit measures contribute effectively to reducing road accidents.
