Lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly are currently at the State High Court in Ikeja for the hearing of a case filed by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who is contesting his removal from office.
Obasa was ousted by 36 lawmakers on 13 January 2025 over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. He is seeking legal redress to reclaim his position.
Among the respondents in the case are the lawmakers as well as Hon. Mojisola Meranda, who was initially elected to replace him but later stepped down.
Meranda, in a statement last week, explained her decision, saying, “My action was in respect of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership.”

At the previous hearing on 20 February, Obasa was represented by Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), while Femi Falana (SAN), Muiz Banire (SAN), and a team of other lawyers appeared for 34 lawmakers.
Olu Daramola (SAN) and Dada Awosika (SAN) represented additional House members seeking to join the case. Meranda had Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) and other senior lawyers in her legal team.
Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, in a brief ruling, ordered that all members of the Lagos Assembly be joined as parties in the suit and adjourned the hearing to 7 March for arguments on preliminary objections.
